We have seen well designed websites go stale within a few months, not because the design failed, but because updating it meant calling a developer, and eventually nobody bothered. A notice that needs a developer to publish is a notice that does not go up.
So when we hand over a website, the test we use is simple: can the person who actually writes the content change a page, add a product or post a notice without help, the same week we leave. If the answer is no, we have not finished the job, no matter how the site looks.
What we check before handover
We sit with whoever will actually maintain the site, not their manager, and have them make three real changes while we watch. Whatever they struggle with gets fixed before we consider the project done.
