A website the client updates himself

Manufacturing company Website design and handover 4 min read

This is an illustrative pattern, based on how manufacturing companies generally end up with a website they cannot maintain themselves. It is not any particular client project.

The existing website had been built well once, several years earlier, but every change since then had needed a developer. New products were not listed, notices did not go up, and the content quietly went out of date, not because nobody cared but because nobody could change it without help.

What we checked first

Before redesigning anything, we sat with the person who would actually maintain the site and had them try to make three ordinary changes on the existing setup. Watching where they got stuck told us more about what to fix than the design brief did.

What we built

A rebuilt site on a content system the marketing team can use directly: adding a product, changing a page, posting a notice, all without a developer.

Where it stands

Content that used to wait months for a developer's time now goes up the same day it is written.

Every change needs a developer

The marketing team updates it

A notice that never goes up

Posted the same day

Content years out of date

Kept current in-house
